sights and activities
At the "Högbergsfältet" there is Tilas Stoll, a horizontal mine, where you can go in and see what the mine looks like from the inside.
Tilas Stoll is a mine tunnel open to visitors throughout the year. The tunnel is approximately 25 meters long and leads into the Krakbo Mine, which is 100 meters deep and opens into a spectacular underground chamber.
Important!
Since the mine is a shaft over 100 meters deep, filled with water, and supported by wooden structures, it is strictly forbidden to leave the safety platform. There is no solid ground beyond it, and stepping outside may result in falling into the water-filled shaft. The safety platform also protects visitors from falling rocks, ice, and logs from above.
Tilas Stoll dates back to 1767 and was originally operated by two miners from Sala. It is named after Mining Master Daniel Tilas (1712–1772) and was initially intended as an exploration tunnel. It may later have been used for transporting ore and other minerals. The entrance section of the tunnel was created by fire-setting, which is visible in the smooth rock surfaces, while gunpowder blasting was used further in.
A “stoll” (in mining terms) is a horizontal adit that connects at one end to a vertical rock face. It typically opens into a hillside or cliff and leads to mining chambers or deeper shafts. One common purpose of stoll tunnels was to drain water from the mine — a major challenge before the invention of the steam engine.
Krakbo Mine was shut down in 1905.
Getting to Tilas Stoll
Some visitors have found it challenging to locate Tilas Stoll. Be sure to check the maps available at the parking areas before beginning your hike.
From Filipstad: Drive past Persberg and turn right about 300 meters after the village, following signs to Högbergsfältet. There are two parking areas at the nature reserve: one at the first trailhead (with a dry toilet) and another further along the gravel road. It’s approximately a 1 km walk from the parking areas. Maps and signs are available at both parking locations.
Please note that Tilas Stoll is located in a nature reserve with specific regulations. We recommend reading these rules before entering the area.
No matter where you start, your goal is to reach the lake — the entrance to Tilas Stoll is on the lakeside.
Högbergsfältet on a peninsula in Lake Yngen consists of 15 mines with 200 deep fenced in mine shafts which were worked from 15th century. These are among the oldest mines in Bergslagen.
