Lars Lerin fell in love with Sandgrund
The popular artist had received requests from many quarters, but he himself took a liking to the Sandgrund building, which was located in the middle of a cultural district, close to the city centre and in a beautiful natural environment.
- ‘It’s an exciting building and it will be fun to bring it to life. It has almost looked like a fortress, but now I hope that it will become a lively and fun place with lots of light,’ said Lars Lerin at the time. Now that a few years have passed, many visitors from all over Sweden make the pilgrimage to the art centre.
About Lars Lerin
Lars Lerin was born in 1954 in Munkfors. He studied at Gerlesborgsskolan 1974-75 and at Valand School of Art in Gothenburg 1980-84. Lars Lerin is considered one of the Nordic region’s foremost watercolourists and has exhibited in both group and solo exhibitions in galleries and museums in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, France, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway, Germany and the USA. He is represented in municipalities, county councils and museums in both Sweden and Norway. His debut as an author came in 1983 and since then he has published a long series of books with his own texts and images at his own publishing house Syntryck.
The art gallery Sandgrund Lars Lerin
Here, in the bright and airy room on the headland that forms the entrance to the mighty Klarälvsdeltat, Lars Lerin’s pictures from Lofoten, the Middle East, America and Munkfors are on display. HSB estates, birds, amusement parks and vast expanses. Lars Lerin captures both the near and the more distant in his pictures. Some small, others monumental. All equally rich in detail. And few places could be better suited than this functionalist-inspired building in one of Karlstad’s most beautiful outdoor spaces. The art centre also has a shop selling Lars Lerin’s books, and if you want to take a coffee break you can do so in a café with a beautiful view of the Klarälven river.
Art centre being renewed
Lars Lerin is very prolific and not everything fits in the gallery at the same time. Therefore, the exhibition is rehung about once a year to keep it alive. It is not unusual for as much as two-thirds of the basic exhibition to be replaced. Sandgrund Lars Lerin is always worth a visit, even if you have visited the art centre before.
Guest exhibitors
In addition to Lars Lerin’s own art, guest exhibitors are also invited throughout the year with their works. Read more at sandgrund.org/guest-exhibitors
