Sign: Södra Torget

  • Imagine that this square is full of market stalls and that there are people all around you. Not only at this spot, Södra Torget, but also on the north square, which you see across the river Varnan, and on connecting streets all around. It's time for the biggest event of the year, Fastingsmarknaden, a market which had its heyday between the years 1730 and 1850. The market was visited by mill patrons and powerful traders from all over Sweden.

The most important event during these market days was the Iron Exchange, when the world market price for iron was determined here in the city. You can actually argue that Kristinehamn during this time had the same importance for the world economy as Wall Street in New York has today.

  • At what time during the year was Fastingsmarknaden held?
