The nature reserve of Hovfjället is set up with the aim to protect and conserve valuable nature, but also to provide means for recreation. There are many trails for hiking and cross country skiing, as well as slopes and lifts for alpine skiing. Hovfjället is also a great area for berry picking and birdwatching.
The upper part of the mountain is dominated by lichen and heather rock with low windswept pines. In the lower areas, natural forests of firs are found and in the more open areas the ground is more marshy.

Hovfjället is well-signposted from the trunk road 45 at Vägsjöfors approx. 17 km north of Torsby.
