Whether you’re looking for a place to unwind after a day of hiking or want to treat yourself to an exclusive experience, there are several accommodation options to make your adventure even more memorable.
Start your journey on Vålön, Kristinehamn’s largest island, and continue to the islands of Kalvön and Sibberön, located within a nature reserve. The islands are connected by bridges, and the trail is 4 km one way. It’s an easy day hike through Värmland’s forests, rewarded with stunning views of Vänern. The trail is suitable for families with children and those who appreciate the calmness.
The Vålön and Kalvön sections are easy to walk, but parts of the Sibberön section may have narrow areas where you'll need to walk around a fallen tree. Along the trail, there are opportunities for swimming from both child-friendly, shallow sandy beaches (on Vålön) and from smooth rocks (on Vålön and Kalvön).
There are great chances to see wildlife, especially birds. Enjoy your packed lunch at a beautiful spot overlooking Vänern, pick mushrooms and berries, or try your luck fishing at Lakholmsudden, where you'll be treated to a magical view of the lake (on Sibberön). The trail is equipped with several BBQ areas, and firewood is replenished each week during peak season. However, there’s no guarantee of firewood availability when you arrive.
The islands are equipped with docks, boat spaces, BBQ areas, wind shelters, and outdoor toilets. Camping is allowed at designated areas on Kalvön (see map). On Sibberön, there’s a simple cabin available for overnight stays (no reservation required). Firewood is replenished at the BBQ areas on Vålön, Kalvön, and Sibberön, as well as at the Sibberön cabin.
Remember to bring mosquito repellent and good hiking shoes – sandals are not recommended as there have been sightings of adders in the area. Pack a picnic, as there are no food services available on the islands.
Be sure to check out the horizon over Vänern, with the golden spots being Västra and Östra Lakholmsviken. It’s so peaceful, you’ll just want to take it all in. Have a great hike!
The trail is open year-round, but is maintained from June to September.
