According to legend Rataho was a place filling the church's function at that time there was no local church. The location outside Arvika consists of a rock wall with a fallen boulder that working as a pulpit. Before roads and a local church was built Bogen agrarian population could only visit a nearby church 1-2 times per year. Instead they used to gather for worship in special places in the home district. Some believe that there may have been a place upon which they preserved corpses awaiting transport to the church.
The actual venue consists of a rock wall with a fallen boulder which was used as a pulpet. The name Rataho probably comes from the Finnish word raita, meaning willow, and aho, meaning lumber, thus willow rubble.
Ratahokyrkan is somewhat reminiscent of Astrid Lindgren's story about Ronja and Mattisborgen.
