The peace between Sweden and Norway was established on 16 August 1814. One hundred years later, the Peace Monument was inaugurated in front of 12,000 spectators who also got to listen to speeches by Storting President Lövland, Bishop von Scheele and Swedish Peace Chairman Carl Sundblad. The peace monument is 18 meters high and built in white granite from Idefjorden. The architect's name was Lars Johan Lehming. The idea behind the design of the Peace Monument is a common foundation from which the two countries have grown up next to each other and at the top stands a Norwegian and a Swede and shake hands - the border goes straight between them. Possibility of guided tour.
Available all year around. Anniversery celebrated on August 16th.
In 1959, radio broadcaster Allan Schulman suggested a joint Norwegian/Swedish radiobroadcast from the peace area. The name was established during the program and composed of both the Norwegian and Swedish word for fun - Morokulien. Moro is Norwegian and Kul is Swedish.
