With a little bit of fantasy one can hear the sledge-hammers hit and the old wooden waterpump squeak. Perhaps one can imagine the smell and smoke caused by the firesetting... Please make an appointment when coming in a larger group. Handicraft and cafeteria. History: According to the legend, people were mining for silver as early as before the Black Death, thus around 1350. Smelting-houses in Nykroppa and later in Herrhult were used to smelt the silver ore. The ore was carried from the mines to the smelting-house along a path that is now part of a walking trail called Silverleden. The mines were closed down in the middle of the 19th century. The mining field is a unique monument of Swedish mining history. There are several different mines in Hornkullen but only Dunderkammaren is pumped and can be visited. To go down into the mine is very exciting for the whole family.
