In 1873, three smaller islets were assembled into this islet, which was given the shape of the armored boat Monitor.
John Ericsson's sensational creation, the armored boat Monitor, defeated the Merrimac in the naval battle at Hampton Roads during the American Civil War in 1862. This became of crucial importance for the course of the war. The end of the civil war resulted in, among other things, abolition of slavery throughout the United States.
Monitorholmen/inslet in the middle of Skillerälven next to the city garden the river Skiller is a cozy and nice "recreation area."
