What applies to me if I brought my roof top tent?

Camping with a roof top tent gives you a lot of freedom, but there are always questions about where its ok to stop for the night! Here´s a guide to help you navigate the rules and guidelines that apply to you.

  • Parking rules: Because a roof top tent doesn’t require putting any tent pegs into the ground, it is often classed as parking rather than camping. Meaning you need to follow the local parking rules.
  • No furnishing: You are not allowed to put out any camping chair or other furnishings surrounding your car as this classes it as camping. But having the tent unfolded and sleeping in it counts as sleeping in the car..
  • Stay on the roads: Driving on the terrain is generally not allowed. This means that you are not allowed to drie on fields, beaches or in the woods. Stay on the roads and/or parking areas.
  • Protect nature: Always consider the nature surrounding you when camping. Protect it at all costs.
  • Spending the night in a parking lot: In most cases its allowed to park and sleep in parking lots, but in some towns it is forbidden, even in a roof top tent.
  • Respect other people: If somebody asks you to move your car, do it. There are always other beautiful places to explore.
  • Be respectful: Don’t damage sensitive ground and always take your rubbish with you when you leave.
