Who can go hunting?
Every landowner holds hunting rights on their property, regardless of its size. If landowners choose not to exercise these rights, they have the option to lease them, either fully or partially. Hunting is practiced to varying degrees on most land where it is legally allowed.
How do the Swedes hunt?
There are 3 common ways of hunting in Sweden.
The first is hunting with a dog. There are different types of hunting dogs and all are used for different hunting tactics but basically the dog seeks out the prey for the hunter to then shoot it.
The second way is by guard hunting. The hunter stations himself at a spot where animals often pass, or alternatively at a well-frequented grazing area and waits until they prey passes to shoot.
The third way is by stealth hunting. This type of hunting is more technical as you are chasing the animal. The hunter carefully moves against the wind and searches for the animal whilst constantly moving.
Do you need a permit to go hunting in Sweden?
Everyone who goes hunting in Sweden must pay an annual hunting conservation fee. The fee is valid for one year, from 1 July to 30 June the following year.
