Selma Lagerlöf has recieved a beautiful spot where she sits opposite Wermland Opera and near the water of Klarälven. It was the teacher Thyra Freding who urged the town of Karlstad to erect the statue of the writer. She thouht that the people of Värmland owed a debt of gratitude to Selma Lagerlöf and a monument should be made in memory of her. The statue was completed in time for the 100th anniversary of her birth in 1958.
