Position at the northern edge of yew range in Sweden makes premises fundamentally interesting and has long been known for its rich abundance of yews. The reserve also has an unique vegetation with a number of rare flowering plants, such as baneberry, Vicia sylvatica, Lathyrus sylvestris, also extremely rich of lichens, mosses and fungi. Gillertjärn nature reserve is most easily reached via the E18 between Årjäng and Karlstad. At Långserud (just under 7 km west of the E18/175 road junction) turn off towards Torp and turn left after approx. 4.5 km towards Finnerud/Finnsjön. After that, it's 2.7 km to the car park, at Finnsjön's bathing area. From the car park, you walk about 1.5 km up to the reserve.
