During the Middle Ages was one of the major pilgrim goals Olof the Holy grave in Nidaros now Trondheim. People wandered from different parts of Scandinavia and also came from the continent. There were several leads through Sweden and one of them went through Western Värmland. At the Reformation ceased pilgrimage in the Protestant part of Christendom. Today there is a renewed interest in pilgrim routes and pilgrimages, both individually and in groups. 2010 appointed the Council of Europe Olav roads in the Nordic countries to the European Cultural Routes as was previously done with other pilgrim routes.
Welcome to walk along Pilgrimsleden Västra Värmland. The trail is part of a pilgrimage route towards Trondheim, the medieval Nidaros. The pilgrimage route stretches through scenic areas in Säffle, Arvika and Eda municipalities. It starts on the island of Lurö in Säffle and goes up to Skillingmark in Eda. The last stretch goes from Skillingsfors via the old church site Klevan up to Högsäter where the trail continues on the Norwegian side.
It is possible to buy a pilgrim's passport for those who go this trail. At churches and a few other places along the trail, it is possible to stamp this. Those who walked at least 10 mil, ridden or cycled 20 mil can receive St. Olaf diploma. Read more in the document Pax et bonum Pilgrim Passport.

Year around. Regular boat trips runs from mid-June to end of August from Lurö to Ekenäs.
