The church in Östra Ämtervik is known as the church of Selma Lagerlöf and the graveyard holds the Lagerlöf family grave. You can also find the graves of several real life people who inspired Selma Lagerlöf's fictional characters, such as Jan in Skrolycka and Ingemar Johansson. In 1896, S/S Freja the steamboat sank in lake Fryken, and the drowning victims were laid to rest in the graveyard of Östra Ämtervik church.
The building of the church in Östra Ämtervik began in 1795, but it was not completed until 1848. Due to the properties of the bedrock, the church was built in a north-south direction, placing the chancel to the south. Among the inventories of the church, you will find the trunk of Uncle Eberhard from Selma Lagerlöf's "Gösta Berling's Saga".
