The history of the church in Sunne can be traced as far back as the 13th century in different documents. The present church was rebuilt after a fire in 1886 and stood completed in 1888. Sunne church takes holds people and is called “The Cathedral of Fryksdalen” because of its size.The oldest object in the church is the baptismal font from the 13th century. One of Sunne's well-known priests is Anders Fryxell, who was a professor in history and also wrote the lyrics to “Värmlandsvisan”. Author Göran Tunström was the son of a priest and grew up in the old rectory, which unfortunately was lost to a fire in 2008.
During the summer, Sunne church is an open "road church", welcoming travellers from near and far.
