Shelter – Glaskogens Nature Reserve

Sleep under the clear sky in the wilderness of Glaskogens Nature Reserve. A very simple sleeping place, but a very special experience. The nature reserve offers 300 km of hiking trails, deep forests and many lakes. With the Glaskogen visitor card you have access to all shelters, fire wood and all other facilities in the nature reserve. There are also simple cottages in the area where you can stay on a bed of spruce twigs or a simple bunk.

Charcoal shack

At Brunskog’s Hembygdsgård (the local heritage centre in Brunskog), you can spend the night in a historical charcoal burners hut – a truly unique experience! Charcoal stacks were already used in the middle ages to produce coal for forging and were still used in the 20th century in western Sweden. The process of making charcoal starts by covering a pile of wood with earth, peat, grass and sand and then ignite the charcoal stack. The charcoal stack doesn’t burn with an open fire, it just smolders. If the charcoal stack catches fire, the wood burns and there will be ash instead of charcoal. The charcoal stack had to be overseen day and night by coal miners, who lived in huts. Coaling ceased with the end of World War II in 1945.

Here you can make your coffee over the open fire, sleep on a bed of fir, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings by lake Värmeln. In the area there are many older buildings that house both a smithy, a ceramics workshop, a café open in the summer, a shop and a restaurant.
