From Moss in Norway to Karlstad
Your bike journey starts at the Oslofjord in Moss, Norway, and ends in Karlstad, located by Sweden’s largest lake, Vänern. The name of the trail comes from the fact that Sweden and Norway were in a union from 1814 to 1905. The union was formed in Moss and ended in Karlstad, just like the bike trail. Since the dissolution of the union, we have continued to be good neighbors with a lot of exchange across the border.
A Varied Landscape
When you cycle the Union Trail, you will be struck by the beautiful, varied landscape. One moment you are cycling through villages, and the next along one of our many lakes. You will ride on winding gravel roads through forests and open landscapes with grazing animals. The area has a rich wildlife with elk, deer, foxes, and much more that can appear along the way. You are never far from a cooling bath or a beautiful viewpoint where you can enjoy your picnic.
Food and Sleep along the Union Trail
On the journey, it’s important to sleep and eat well. The Union Trail is divided into suitable daily stages; there are usually places to stop for food, otherwise, your accommodation can provide a packed lunch. You will sleep well in hotels, manors, glasshouses, and even a train hotel is ready with a comfortable bed and a good dinner after a day on the bike. Our accommodations are “Bike Friendly Accommodations”, meaning they have adapted to be especially welcoming to cyclists.
Experiences and Attractions along the Union Trail
Along the Union Trail, there are many attractions that relate to its history. But also art galleries, a whisky distillery, and farm shops appear along the trail. If you want a change from the bike saddle, there are many nature-based activities, boat trips, paddling, or why not try your luck fishing in Dalsland’s Canal or in the Halden Watercourse. We also recommend a hike or a visit to Dalsland’s Activities which have high-altitude tracks, horseback riding, and an elk park.
