Roadtrip: May Silja’s Cultural Weekend in Värmland

Join Danish influencer May Silja on a flavorful, relaxing, and culture-filled weekend trip through Värmland. Discover Karlstad's cultural hub and the peaceful manor life of the countryside.

Day 1

Start your journey by discovering some of the cultural gems of the capital city, Karlstad. The great thing is that all the tips here are just a few minutes’ walk from each other.

Circular Mall Rundgång

In Karlstad, you can find all these tips within just a few minutes’ walk from each other. Rundgång in the Mitticity mall is Värmland’s first reuse mall where you can shop with heart and find handpicked and creatively upcycled clothes and items. There are many treasures to choose from here!

Sandgrund Lars Lerin

Sandgrund Lars Lerin, the once-legendary dance hall, has now become a must for culture enthusiasts drawn to what might be Sweden’s most beloved and talked-about artist. And while you’re here, don’t miss the chance to enjoy a coffee at the café.

“It was an exciting and different experience 🤍” – May Silja

Elite Stadshotellet

Right next to the Klarälven river is Elite Stadshotellet, Karlstad’s oldest hotel, completed in 1871. Stay where many international stars have stayed over the years and enjoy what – according to May Silja – is an insanely good hotel breakfast.

“The best view – love Sweden 💙” – May Silja

Wermland Opera

If, like May Silja, you love going to the theater, you should absolutely take the chance to book tickets to a performance at Wermland Opera. It promises to be an evening of first-class entertainment in the beautiful and classic theater hall.

“Very talented actors and an impressive orchestra in the pit 🎻🎺🪈🎷, truly a fantastic evening. 💖” – May Silja

Day 2

Now it’s time to leave Karlstad and head northwest for an hour’s drive to Arvika.

Klässbols Linneväveri

At Klässbols Linneväveri, you will find Värmland’s finest textile craftsmanship. Did you know that their tablecloths are used every year at the Nobel Banquet? Here, you can take a peek at the production process and purchase their beautiful textiles.

“It was so cool to see how they produce their beautiful products” – May Silja

Elins Bakgård

It’s just over a 20-minute drive to the center of Arvika, and now it’s time for a delicious lunch and coffee at Elins Bakgård, a cozy restaurant in an old-fashioned style where attention to detail really shines.

Mårbacka

Continue your journey – about an hour and ten minutes by car – to the heart of Värmland’s literary world – Mårbacka. Whether you choose to take a guided tour inside or simply wander through the beautiful garden, Selma Lagerlöf’s home is a must-see on your trip.

“There is so much pride here in Värmland about their history. It’s so enriching and exciting to learn about.” – May Silja

Ulvsby Herrgård

What could be better than staying at the old county manor mentioned in Selma Lagerlöf’s Gösta Berling’s Saga? Ulvsby Herrgård is just 20 minutes from Mårbacka. Take the opportunity to relax in the cozy wellness area with baths and sauna before enjoying a flavorful evening dinner.

Day 3

Gamla Kraftstationen

On the third day, it’s time to head to Gamla Kraftstationen in Deje, about a 50-minute drive away. Experience modern art and craftsmanship in beautifully preserved industrial settings. Definitely a perfect spot for a meal or a coffee break.

Hennickehammars Herrgård

Then it’s time to head to the final stop of the weekend trip, the wonderful Hennickehammars Herrgård. The journey there takes about 55 minutes through the forests of Värmland. Here, you’ll enjoy both a delicious meal and a restful night’s sleep.
