Hike, paddle and fishing – in the wilderness of Värmland

Here, you can hike on 300 km of scenic trails ranging from a few hours to day trips and week-long hikes. You can stay overnight in cabins or at Glaskogen’s wilderness camping in Lenungshammar. Throughout the reserve, there are campsites, and if you’re more adventurous, you can sleep in shelters.

There are also 150 km of canoe routes throughout the reserve. Partially through the large lakes, but also through a myriad of smaller lakes and streams where you can truly experience the wilderness. Here you can glide in total silence over the magnificent lakes and enjoy the beauty of nature. There are everything from shorter canoe routes to longer trips with overnight stays. For kayaking, the larger lakes are recommended, especially Stora Gla.

For packrafting, tours that combine paddling and hiking in the southern part of the reserve are suggested. All hiking trails are marked with orange signs and are intended solely for hiking.

If you want to cycle, there are special gravel roads more suitable for it. On these winding roads, you can experience not only nature but also spot wild animals in the forest.

Here you’ll find moose, mountain hare, marten, fox, wolf, and beaver. Tracks of both bear and lynx have also been seen, and the reserve is home to 90-100 breeding bird species. However, to utilize the reserve’s overnight facilities and fireplaces, you need to purchase the Glaskogen conservation card, the so-called Glaskogskortet.

To fish in any of the approximately 80 lakes and tarns in and around Glaskogen, a fishing permit is required. Both cards can be most conveniently purchased on Glaskogen’s website or on-site at the Info Center in Lenungshammar.

In Lenungshammar, besides the Info Center and wilderness camping, there is also Café Carl with a menu that clearly ties to the forest. Everything is homemade, and most of it is locally produced. And there’s always a selection of home-baked cookies and cakes. If you want to soak up some history, there are ancient remains such as Stone Age settlements and pit traps at several places to view.

Glaskogen is a southern part of the Finn Forests. Finns settled here already in the 17th century. They cleared the land using slash-and-burn agriculture, hence the name slash-and-burn Finns, and thus parts of Glaskogen are called Finnskogen. The area also hosted several sawmills, ironworks, and copper works, and by Lake Stora Gla, there was once a glassworks. The hand-blown glass from Glava Glassworks became famous and can today be seen in its own museum.

The Glaskogen Nature Reserve was established to promote outdoor activities, and active forestry is conducted within the area. There are specific rules one must follow when in the nature reserve, in addition to the right of public access. They may seem obvious but are good to read up on before heading out into the wilderness.
