The founder of Karlstad king Karl IX stands statue at Residenstorget right by the river Klarälven. In 1584 Duke Karl, not yet to be king, declared the market town of Tingvalla the city of Karlstad.
In 1908 the city council of Karlstad decided to erect a monument in remembrance of this important event. It was the sculptor Christian Eriksson who got the assignment. In 1926 the statue was completed and was unveiled in the presence of the late king Gustaf V.
