For four hundred years the church was situated by the side of the river, where Stadshotellet is located today. The old church was destroyed however, by a fire in 1719 and a new church was built between 1723 and 1730 on Lagberget, by Christian Haller from Sachsen. Sixty years passed before the church was completed. The great fire in 1865 also affected the cathedral. The church bells tumbled down and the steeple fell on the church roof, which caught fire and then collapsed. The church tower was rebuilt again however, and it is the one we see today. The latest restoration was carried through in 1998.
