For those who want to discover Värmland on foot, one of our quality-certified hiking trails is an obvious choice. The quality assurance system Värmlandsleder, managed by Visit Värmland, offers trails of varying difficulty levels, spread across the landscape. They take you through deep forests, cultural landscapes, and open meadow areas. Additionally, they all have well-maintained rest areas, providing security during your hike. Here we present three examples of the 19 hiking trails that Värmlandsleder offers.
Ängenleden
Ängenleden is a 17 km hiking trail that circles Ängsjön. The trail is located just outside Sunne in northern Värmland and is marked as difficult. This means you should be a fairly experienced hiker who wants a challenge, as the trail offers relatively large elevation differences. It passes through both forest and cultural landscapes. The area has long been inhabited by people living in harmony with nature, and you will see settlements, summer pasture farms, and crofter’s cottages. Moreover, do not be surprised if you encounter a moose or a capercaillie.
Nötöleden
Nötöleden is a moderate hiking trail, six kilometers long, that passes through an old cultural landscape on Österön just south of Kristinehamn. The nature experience here is characterized by large oaks, lindens, and hazel trees. The trail has a rest area at Hästudden with a fantastic view over Lake Vänern. A perfect place for a coffee break. The entire area through which the hiking trail passes is a nature reserve, and part of the trail goes through grazing land with cows.
Torprundan
Torprundan is located in northern Värmland, in the deep Finnskogarna near the Norwegian border. It extends for 4 kilometers and offers, among other things, an observation tower with wide-ranging views. The trail takes you through pine forest and large bogs, and into deep spruce forest. This trail is named after the rest cabin Bondfugestorp, which is an old cottage from the 1800s. Here you can grill and rest before continuing your trek. Along the trail, you can also read about the nature you are walking through on signs. A perfect and informative hiking trail for the whole family.
Hiking Tips
Before you head out on a hike, it’s important to be well prepared. A pair of good hiking boots will serve you well on all Värmlandsleder, and during the summer, a pair of comfortable sneakers will also be excellent. But remember to always bring some warm clothing and plenty of water. Additionally, it’s a good idea to pack a packed lunch and an extra snack in your backpack.
The Right of Public Access
The Right of Public Access is unique in the world. It allows everyone to move freely in nature, but it’s not just a right, it also comes with the responsibility to not cause damage or litter. This is especially true when you are out hiking on any of the Värmlandsleder trails.
