Experience Culture in Värmland

– Art, Museums, and Historical Sites

Whether you are interested in art, museums, or visiting a preserved historical site, you can find it in Värmland. For art enthusiasts, a visit to Picasso is a must. In Kristinehamn, by the shores of Lake Vänern, you will find Picassoudden, surrounded by a beautiful archipelago setting. Here stands the majestic Jacqueline, one of the world’s largest Picasso sculptures, gazing out over the water. While you are here, take the opportunity to enjoy lunch, dinner, or a fika at Picassos Veranda. They offer everything from shrimp sandwiches with hand-peeled shrimp from Lillängshamnen to Caesar salad, ice cream from Lejonet & Björnen, and beverages like local beer and wine.

If you travel a few miles north, you can also experience the scenic Tilas Stoll, a nature reserve outside Filipstad. This place was once a mining site, and the mine tunnel Tilas Stoll has been preserved since 1767. It is truly fascinating! Speaking of rustic places, if you are looking for a raw industrial environment filled with art experiences, head to Gamla kraftstationen in Deje. This impressive building began construction in 1906 and today houses a unique art gallery, along with a café, shop, and creative meeting space. The café offers a wide range of organic and locally produced dishes, perfect for a fika or a light meal.

If you prefer strolling around museums, Värmland has several gems to offer. Among them is Alma Löv Museum in Östra Ämtervik, which showcases contemporary art in unique and exciting ways. In addition to art exhibitions, the museum also features a theater hall and a café. A few miles west, you can dive into more history at Rackstad Museum in Arvika, which celebrates the artistic elite who lived in the Arvika region in the early 20th century. While you are in the area, a visit to Klässbols Linen Weaving Mill is a must! This weaving mill has been a royal purveyor and the official linen supplier for the Nobel Banquet—an experience not to be missed!

Flavors of Värmland

– Local Ingredients, Creative Cooking, and Värmland Flavors

If you want to tantalize your taste buds, you have come to the right place. Värmland offers culinary experiences for everyone. Just outside Karlstad, you will find Sliperiet Gastronomi at Sliperiet in Borgvik. Here, delicious dishes are created with a focus on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. The old wood mill from 1903 also hosts magnificent art exhibitions featuring both established and newly discovered artists. Today, the art hall is one of Värmland’s largest privately owned galleries.

If you are not afraid of heights, you can enjoy a fine meal at Big Hill Lodge, a former observation tower on the scenic Storhöjden just outside Filipstad. The tower has been modernized while preserving its rich history. The menu is inspired by forest resources, offering a relaxing dining experience with rustic dishes and authentic flavors. At the same time, you can enjoy breathtaking views high above nature.

In southern Värmland, in the city of Karlstad, you will find Matstudion, which offers culinary activities for both individuals and businesses, focusing on locally produced, high-quality ingredients and Värmland flavors. They also run the restaurant Terrassen in Mariebergsskogen. Just a short walk from Karlstad’s city center, you can enjoy a delightful lunch or dinner.
