The nature reserve is the second nature reserve in Värmland County, protected by its water-based natural values.
Water drainage is approximately 28 km. Svartåns nature reserve is largely located in Brattforsheden Nature Conservation Area and Natura 2000 Area, but parts of the water slide (The Forshyttan - Bosjön stretch) are located northeast of Brattforsheden Nature Conservation Area.
Svartån from Bosjön to Grässjön changes in its character from flowing, with deciduous forest-dominated beaches, to calm and meandering, with pine forests along the shores. Within the area there are three larger mosses, the area is otherwise relatively mild and the water is very clear.
The black moon flows mostly through ice-crush sand and in several places the sharp cut in the sand layer is clearly visible. The water slide has a powerful meandering process, where a continuous ongoing erosion and sedimentation process along the shores creates important environments for insects and birds. Adjacent to the sandy beaches, grassy and herbaceous hills occur in the spruce forest.
Vägbeskrivning: The reserve is located between Bosjön in the municipality of Filipstad and Grässjön in Hagfors municipality, about 15 km northwest of Filipstad.
