The former prison in Karlstad was one of the first cell prisons in Sweden when it was inaugurated in 1847. It was built in neoclassic style and was inspired by ancient Greek and Italian architecture. During the 121 years the prison was in use, thousands of prisoners was being kept in the 91 cells. In 1968 the prison was shut down. In 1986 the prison was converted into a hotel and the old cells were transformed into pleasant hotel rooms.
