Paddling

The Dalslands-Nordmarken lake system is a nature area of around 10,000 sq km with countless lakes that are linked together by the charming, classical Dalsland Canal. The area extends from north Dalsland via Årjäng up to the border with Norway. Dalsland-Nordmarken (DANO) is one of the finest lake systems in Europe with clean air, crystal clear water, stunningly beautiful nature and an excellent infrastructure for canoeing and kayaking. Explore the area from the water and take breaks on small islands. There are plenty of undisturbed places to set up camp along the way and revel in the tranquillity all around you. How long and how energetic you want your trip to be depends entirely on you, the choice is yours.

Magiska paddelupplevelser!

Hiking

hilly landscape. This very special wilderness area here in Glaskogen consists of complex lake systems with lakes, tarns, rivers, streams and connecting bogs and fens. There are plenty of things to do and see in the nature reserve. The area is not just a paradise for canoeists and kayakers, it also has over 300 km of hiking trails with shelters, BBQ points, WCs and information signs. Perfect for both day trips and longer outings in this beautiful untouched nature, with plenty of delightful hidden away places to fish and swim. And with 28,000 hectares in which to escape from the madding crowd, there is no risk of congestion.

In addition to the nature reserve, there are many smaller trails and walks in Årjäng and the surrounding area. You can find them in the brochure Hikes & walks in Årjäng.

Cycling adventures

Årjäng is full of wonderful gravel roads and country lanes that are perfect for discovering the area by bicycle. Sweden’s fourth national cycle route that opened in 2021, passes through the Municipality of Årjäng. The 350 km long Unionsleden trail runs from Moss in Norway to Karlstad in Sweden. The trail is unique in many ways and above all, Unionsleden is the only Swedish national route that is actually international. The seven different stages of the trail offer a wide variety of cycling and sightseeing opportunities, places to visit and a rich array of activities. The stages seamlessly join spectacular nature with cosy accommodation and plenty of things to experience along the way. The stages in the Årjäng area are mainly the stretches between Töcksfors and Lennartsfors and down to Bengtsfors in Dalsland. Naturally, you can cycle Unionsleden or parts of it as though you were competing in the Tour de France, but we recommend you take it easy and enjoy a leisurely ride. There is so much to see and experience along the way.

Lelångenleden

A new cycle route for 2024 is Lelångenleden, a 180 kilometer long cycle route that stretches from Uddevalla in the south, through the region of Dalsland up to Årjäng.

Gravel cycling

In our area there are plenty of winding gravel roads that go through forests, along our lakes and pass small villages. Tour of Värmland and Rolling gravel hills in the north are two ready-made tours that you can read more about HERE

Trolley cycling

A different and unusual way to explore the countryside is by taking a trolley ride between Årjäng and Bengtsfors. This old railway line is over 50 km long. You can rail cycle the entire length or parts of it. The choice is yours. Gustavsfors is at about the halfway point. There are places to stay overnight and restaurants and you can also swap rail for water transport here.

Trolley = do the pedaling yourself or let someone else do it 🙂

Unionsleden offers lakeside cycling on large parts of the trail.

Lakeside golfing

Gorgeous golfing

Well-tended greens and a well-designed course in an undulating landscape. Årjäng Golf Club is said to be one of the most beautiful 18-hole courses in Sweden. Nestling in a wooded landscape next to Svensbysjön lake, the course will bring out the best of you. Golf shop, golf carts and naturally a good 19th hole restaurant where you can relax between rounds of golf and watch other golfers, or conclude your day with a delicious meal.

Årjängs GK collaborates with the neighboring club Forsbacka GK in Dalsland. Together, they have developed packaged experiences under the concept “More than just golf”

On horseback

There are plenty of beautiful areas around Årjäng that can be explored on horseback. You can go for a trek along waterside and forest trails. Why not combine a horseback ride with a lunch or coffee break outdoors, while your horse takes a breather? If you feel brave enough, you can even ford rivers on horseback. Several companies in Årjäng also offer horse and carriage trips.
