1000 lakes and one canal

Our beautiful part of Värmland is not only one of the most lake-rich regions of Sweden, we also have the Dalslands kanal that runs like a blue vein throughout the municipality, from Norway all the way to Lake Vänern. You are close to water everywhere, perfect for swimming, fishing and boating.

Of the canal’s beautiful lock environments, Lennartsfors lock staircase is probably the most impressive. The locks and parts of the canal are blasted into the mountain. The staircase consists of three locks with a total level difference of 7.5 meters. Here you experience the historical and cultural environment and to mix in some curiosities, our ski king Thomas Wassberg was born in Lennartsfors!

Trotting and the Årjäng market

Two things that are strongly associated with Årjäng are trotting and Årjängs marknad. The market is definitely the big event of the year. On the third weekend of September, jackals from all over the country attract 50,000-100,000 visitors. For the children there is a popular funfair. The market dates back to the 1600s.

Årjäng has Sweden’s most beautiful trotting track . Here 18 races are held every year and in mid-July the HorsePower Weekend takes place. It is a real folk festival with horsepower on wheels like for example rally sprints in central Årjäng and vintage cars exhibitions. The weekend also includes horsepower on hooves, of course. On V75 Day, 12,000 trotting enthusiasts gather to cheer on their favourites. If you are interested in the history of the racehorse, take the opportunity to visit The Nordic Trotting Museum the trotting museum that is the racetrack’s closest neighbour.

In Årjäng we really do love trotting

Activities on land and water

Here we offer you a great variety of activities close to nature, such as canoeing in dalsland nordmarken lake system, which is one of Europe’s best water sports areas. Guests can go hiking in Glaskogen Nature Reserve, which has a total of 300 km of hiking trails. For those interested in cycling, there is a large selection of winding gravel roads that take you along lakes, through forests and in open landscapes. Sport fishing in our lakes is world class and attracts visitors from near and far. Perch and pike (really large) are our most common species, but the availability of noble fish is also good.

Do you like playing golf? Take a turn on Årjängs golf course beautifully situated at Lake Svensbysjön near Sillerud.

Culture – from classic to cool

In the centre of Årjängs stands the famous  Troll of Årjäng it is 8 meters tall and has shoe size 3,5 meters! We can also boast with stunning murals from the street art festival Artscape, which adorns two of our house walls.. Welcome to enjoy a three kilometres long sculpture walk between the centre of Årjäng and Kyrkeruds Art School. The school’s summer courses in photography, sculpture and painting are very popular.

The Borgås man (Borgåsgubben) is a stone statue that was built up in the 17th century to imprint a living guard and to intimidate enemies. From the hill on which the statue stands, you get an impressive view of Lake Västra Silen.

If you are looking for a little more excitement, we can recommend a visit at Långelanda courthouse – Sweden’s oldest preserved courthouse. In 1865, the priest Anders Lindbäck was on trial here after trying to poison his parishioners by mixing arsenic in communion wine.
