Want to photograph a rich animal and plant life? – Then Kittelfältet is the place for you!
Kittelfältet by the Alster lakes is an area with clear traces of the ice age in the form of deep kettle holes. These holes are crater-like depressions formed by icebergs that were embedded in the sand. The term “dead ice” refers to icebergs that got stuck at the bottom and could not move, unlike the glacier, which was always moving as a large mass and therefore called “living ice.” The largest and deepest holes contain small lakes. Sundstjärn has turquoise-colored water due to the presence of a type of phytoplankton in the water. Older pine forests grow around the Alster lakes and westward towards Sundstjärn.
The reserve was created to preserve the landforms of Kittelfältet. The purpose is also to keep the forest stands intact due to their educational significance for understanding the natural phenomenon.
