In a time when winters for us here in the central and southern parts of the country are often just a rainy extension of autumn, it is reassuring to know that there is still a snow-covered winter landscape within reach. In the hilly, northern parts of Värmland, the average temperature is several degrees lower than in the south, which ensures snow reliability and provides a smorgasbord of activities for everyone looking for wonderful winter adventures.
Skiing for the Whole Family
In Värmland, there are excellent opportunities for great skiing, both downhill and cross-country. Challenge yourself on black runs and snow parks or train on easier, longer slopes. Get your heart racing with cross-country skiing, or glide steadily through tracks in a magical winter forest. Visit Branäs, a well-planned ski resort that offers skiers the best possible experience, or Hovfjället, one of Sweden’s southernmost mountains, which is very beginner-friendly. Want to try cross-country skiing? Visit Långberget with its formidable 63 km of well-maintained cross-country ski trails or try indoor skiing on days with worse weather at the Torsby Ski Tunnel & Sport Center.
Thrilling Adventure with Snowmobiles and Dog Sledding
A more thrilling way to experience the landscape’s nature is with the help of snowmobiles and dog sleds. Both the northern and western parts of Värmland offer several excellent snowmobile trails during snowy winters. At places like Fredros Gård and Hovfjället ski resort, you can join guided tours through snow-covered fairy-tale forests and across frozen waterways. Another action-packed winter adventure is taking a seat in a sled and letting a team of Siberian Huskies take you on a ride. It is an incredible feeling of freedom as you glide through the snow-covered landscape while the strong, happy dogs set the pace. Available, among other places, at Branäs in collaboration with Hike Husky Tours.
Winter Activities on Water – Ice Fishing, Skating, and Refreshing Winter Dips
Ice fishing is an exciting experience. In addition to sturdy, insulated boots and thermal clothing, you’ll need an ice auger, ice spikes, a jigging rod, a pirk (jig), and something comfortable to sit on. Once you’re set up, you can start drilling and try your luck. In Värmland, you can fish for perch, pikeperch, pike, as well as trout, char, and rainbow trout, for example, at Fredros Gård, Hälle Fishing Camp, Ingestrands Camping, or Going North. Always check the ice thickness before heading out and never forget your ice spikes!
If you’re looking for a more fast-paced winter adventure on Värmland’s icy waters, you can try long-distance ice skating on natural ice. At several locations, tracks are also cleared for the public, such as the roughly two-kilometer-long oval ice skating track at Mariebergsviken in Karlstad when the ice is thick enough.
Are you brave enough to take a dip in the middle of winter? In Värmland’s lake-rich landscape, there’s never too far to go for a chilly plunge. Combined with a warming moment in the sauna, it’s a delight for both body and soul. Make sure to stay updated on which spots offer swimming once the ice has formed – or replace the swim with snow rolling. @kallabadstegen on Instagram gives you the best tips on beautiful winter swimming spots in Värmland!
Try Snowshoeing
A wonderful way to experience the beautiful nature, wildlife, and tranquility is on foot. But to avoid trudging through deep snow, modern snowshoes are available to rent at Mattila. Walking on top of the snow blanket is a unique experience with great potential to become a lifelong memory.
Cultural Experiences in Winter
For those interested in culture, there are several exciting and inspiring cultural experiences waiting for you. Visit a museum or attend a performance to brighten up the winter darkness. Wermland Opera in Karlstad has several performances this winter, packed with musical highlights. In Värmland, there are also several museums that are open during the winter. Some suggestions include Rackstad Museum in Arvika, Värmlands Museum in Karlstad, and Kristinehamn Art Museum.
Enjoy good food and cozy accommodation this winter
